What Happens After You Enroll in a Clinical Trial? A Participant's Roadmap
Thinking about joining a clinical study but not sure what comes next? Here is a step-by-step look at what happens after you enroll, from your first visit to the final follow-up, at Arrow Clinical Trials in Daytona Beach.
Deciding to join a clinical trial is a big step, and it is completely normal to wonder what happens next. Will you need to change your routine? How often will you come in? What if you change your mind? This roadmap walks through what a typical study looks like from the first phone call to the final follow-up, so you know what to expect before you ever walk through our doors in Daytona Beach.
Every study is a little different, and your study team will walk you through the exact schedule for yours. But most clinical trials follow the same general path.
Step 1: The First Conversation
It usually starts with a short phone call or online form. A member of our recruitment team will ask a few basic questions about your health, your age, and any medications you take. This is called a pre-screen, and its only purpose is to see whether a study might be a good fit before you spend any time traveling to us.
If it looks like a match, we will schedule your first visit. If it does not, we may let you know about other studies that could be a better fit now or in the future.
Step 2: Informed Consent
Before anything else happens, you will sit down with a member of the study team to review the informed consent form. This document explains, in plain language:
What the study is testing and why
What you will be asked to do, including how many visits and how long the study lasts
The possible risks and benefits
How your information is kept private
Your rights as a participant, including the right to leave at any time
Take your time with this step. Ask every question you have, take the form home if you want to, and talk it over with family or your own doctor. You only sign when you are comfortable. Guidance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration describes informed consent as an ongoing process, not just a one-time signature, so you can keep asking questions throughout the study.
Step 3: Screening Visit
Once you have signed the consent form, the screening visit confirms whether you qualify for the study. Depending on the study, this may include:
A review of your medical history and current medications
A physical exam and vital signs
Blood work or other lab tests
Questionnaires, memory tests, or imaging, depending on the condition being studied
Every study has specific requirements, called eligibility criteria, that help protect participants and make sure the results are reliable. Sometimes people do not qualify after screening. That is not a reflection on you, and it is common. If you do not qualify, the team can let you know about other studies that may fit.
Step 4: Your First Study Visit
If you qualify, you will be officially enrolled and scheduled for your first study visit, sometimes called a baseline visit. The team records where your health stands at the start, so changes can be measured over time.
Many studies compare a study medication with a placebo or with standard treatment. In those studies, participants are usually assigned to a group at random, and in many cases neither you nor the study team knows which group you are in. This is called blinding, and it helps keep the results fair and accurate. Your study team will explain exactly how this works for your study.
Step 5: Ongoing Study Visits
Over the length of the study, you will come in for scheduled visits. These visits may include checking in on how you feel, vital signs, lab work, and picking up or returning study medication. Some studies also include phone check-ins or a diary you fill out at home.
Visits are planned in advance, and our team will work with you on scheduling. You will always have a direct contact on the study team if questions come up between visits.
Throughout the study, your health is watched closely. Many participants tell us they appreciate the extra attention and the time our team takes to listen.
Step 6: Completing the Study
When your part of the study ends, you will have a final visit, and some studies include a follow-up call or visit afterward to check in on how you are doing. The study team will also talk with you about what comes next for your care, and your regular doctor stays your doctor throughout.
Results from the full study usually take time to analyze once every participant has finished. When results are available, many studies share a summary, and you can ask your study team how to find it.
Your Rights at Every Step
No matter where you are in the process, a few things are always true:
Participation is voluntary. You can leave a study at any time, for any reason, without it affecting your regular medical care.
Your safety comes first. Every study is reviewed and monitored by an Institutional Review Board, an independent group that protects the rights and well-being of participants, as explained by the National Institutes of Health.
Your privacy is protected. Your personal health information is kept confidential.
You can always ask questions. There is no such thing as a silly question when it comes to your health.
Many studies also provide study-related care at no cost and may offer compensation for your time and travel. Your study team will go over what applies to your specific study before you sign anything.
What Participants Make Possible
Every medication on pharmacy shelves today was made possible by people who volunteered for clinical research. By taking part, participants help researchers understand which treatments work, for whom, and how safely, which can shape care for families for years to come.
