This research study is designed to find out whether muvalaplin, compared to a placebo, can reduce the likelihood of major cardiovascular events — such as heart attack, stroke, or procedures to restore blood flow — in adults who have high Lp(a) levels and either existing heart disease or risk factors for it.
High Lp(a) is a type of cholesterol-related particle in the blood that is mostly determined by genetics and remains relatively stable throughout life. Elevated Lp(a) has been linked with plaque buildup in the arteries, which increases cardiovascular risk even when other lipid levels are treated.
This is a Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial — meaning participants are randomly assigned to receive either muvalaplin or a placebo, and neither you nor the study team will know which one you’re getting during the study.
Adults 18 years and older with high Lp(a) (≥ 175 nmol/L) and cardiovascular disease or risk factors may be eligible.
Everyone in the study continues to receive their regular medical care.
The study plans to enroll about 10,450 participants worldwide and is expected to continue for several years, with an estimated completion around March 2031.
Why join? Participation in this study may help advance research into whether lowering elevated lipoprotein(a) can reduce the risk of serious heart and blood vessel events. You will receive study-related medical care at no cost from our research team and may be compensated for your time and travel.
